Indoor Gardening
Slow Living Lifestyle – growing an indoor hydroponic garden

A winter’s ice storm transformed our land, turning trees into sculptures of ice. Freezing rain fell from the clouds, but inside my home, it was cozy and warm. Despite the lingering cold outside, my indoor garden tower burst with herbs and vegetables. Eager for spring, I started anew, harvesting my bounty and planting new seeds.

This artist vignette illustrates indoor “Lettuce Grow” hydroponic gardening in a slow living lifestyle; it combines gardening, the beauty and power of winter, and a handmade beaded project on a loom.

Step into the countryside with me during an awe-inspiring ice storm, and plant an indoor garden. It’s as if spring has settled into a corner of the home even though ice coats the world outside. I’ll harvest fresh, organic herbs and leafy vegetables. Then, dry and preserve them for use in teas and recipes.

In anticipation of spring, I’ll make a seed-beaded bookmark on a loom. It’s a tribute to the honeybee, the champion of spring. I’ll weave this simple project using Delica seed beads to form a mosaic of little honeybees working on their comb.

How does indoor gardening fit into the slow living lifestyle?

Indoor gardening can be a great way to incorporate elements of slow living into your daily routine. Here are a few ways it can contribute to a slower, more mindful lifestyle:

Connection to nature: Indoor gardening allows you to bring a piece of nature into your home, and connect with the natural world even when you’re indoors. This can help you feel more grounded and connected to the present moment.

Mindfulness: Gardening requires patience, focus, and attention to detail, which can help you practice mindfulness. It can be a meditative activity that allows you to focus on the present and let go of any distractions or worries.

Slow pace: Indoor gardening requires a slower pace, as plants need time to grow and develop. By taking care of indoor plants, you’ll learn to appreciate the slow process of growth and development and to let go of the need for instant gratification.

Creativity: Indoor gardening allows you to get creative with your space, whether it’s by designing a garden in a small apartment or repurposing old containers to create unique planters. This can be a great way to tap into your creative side and express yourself.

Self-sufficiency: Indoor gardening can also help increase your self-sufficiency, as you can grow your own herbs, vegetables, and fruits, reducing your dependence on commercial products.

Health and wellness: Indoor gardening can also have positive effects on your health and well-being. Studies have shown that spending time in green spaces can reduce stress, improve mood, and boost cognitive function.

Overall, indoor gardening can be a great way to slow down, connect with nature, and improve your overall well-being.

So, if you’re looking for a way to slow down and find balance in your life, indoor gardening might be just the thing for you.
