When sowing seeds we make our own seed compost with Coir (https://amzn.to/39INNuq) and multipurpose compost mixed roughly 50/50. This gives a good loose seed compost which germinates seeds well. We cover our seeds with Vermiculite (https://amzn.to/3dvN2pz) as it allows the seeds to easily sprout and germinate.
We use a Heated Propagator (https://amzn.to/3fJReEP) to germinate all of our seeds in February. We put a capillary mat in to help keep the seeds moist. The mat is made from recycled fabrics and can be composted after a few weeks when it starts to deteriorate.
Growing your own seeds is a great way to fill a vegetable patch or allotment and keeps costs low. Allotment gardening should not cost a lot and sowing your own seeds helps keep costs down whilst allowing you to grow a variety of vegetables. If your aim is to grow your own vegetables and become more self sufficient then knowing what to sow and when to sow seeds will help with this.
